Are ISO standards mandatory?Why aren't ISO standards free?

There are thousands of ISO standards and they include:


1. Product Standards


2. System Standards


3. Guidelines


4. Technical Specifications


etc.


These include how to make a DVD or CD. How to improve your management system beyond ISO 9001 and much more.


By ISO standards if you mean ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 than they are not mandatory. They are voluntary in nature. Organizations decide to implement them based on need of their bown need and/or customer requirement.


Why ISO standards are not free? well we belive they should be free or at least standards of mass interest like ISO 9001, ISO 14001 should be free as they are developed from contribution of participating nations [over 150 of them] using tax payers money.
